Sunrise At Shell Beach In Western Australia – A Memory Never To Forget

February 26, 2008 by Kimberly · 1 Comment

I was looking through my photos from my stint that I lived and traveled in Australia back in 1994-1995.

One of my favorite photos is of me on Shell Beach in Western Australia at Sunrise in January of 1995. Shell beach is a 110 km long stretch of beach along the L’Haridon Bight.

shell-beach-monkey-mia-western-australia-jan-3-7-1995-sunrise.JPG

Shell Beach is 1 of 2 beaches in the world made entirely of shells, up to 10 m deep. The salinity of the water allowed Cardiid Cockles to multiply exponentially as their natural predators did not adapt well to the increased salinity of the water.

There is an unbelievable “fresh” feeling about this area, and what a sight to see only shells, no sand, on a beach! Wow! It is breathtaking. The water was so calm that morning that it was all so picturesque!

I have a handful of seemingly perfectly sun-bleached, white shells in my hands, which is comprised of Cockle shells.

cockleshell.jpgScientific Classification of Cockles Shells @ Shell Beach, WA:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Bivalvia
Order: Veneroida
Superfamily: Cardioidea
Family: Cardiidae
Genera: Fragum

Photo Right: Example of a cockle shell

I can honestly say that I truly miss Western Australia! Absolutely Gorgeous…

I hope you enjoyed today’s installment of Exotic Animal Lover! Until next time…

Majestic Animals of the Amazonian Rainforest

February 25, 2008 by Kimberly · 8 Comments

Some of the most amazing animals with vivid coloration and patterns come from the Amazonian Rainforest…

Many of the world’s most endangered animals also hail from the Amazon…

Amazon Rainforest Animals by Lucien Oliveira

Most of the world’s rainforests are located in Central and South America, West and Central Africa, and Southeast Asia. They are very wet areas near the equator that give true meaning to the expression “world of abundance”, an expression that reflects on the variety of rainforest animals. Brazil holds 30% of all tropical rainforests that remain on Earth, and they are represented by Amazonia.

standingjaguar.jpgThe Amazon rainforest animals are part of a big ecosystem sustained by an incredible amount of trees and other plants. Almost every inch is covered with vegetation. Amazonia has 427 species of mammals, 1294 species of birds, 378 of reptiles, 427 amphibians, and 3,000 fish. Among the mammals we can find the jaguar, an incredibly agile animal with a powerful bite, giant otters, the pink dolphin, also called “boto” by the natives, which is one of the three species of dolphins on Earth that live on freshwater, sloths (large and slow moving animals), armadillos, the peculiar tamandua, or anteater, tapirs, which are active mostly at night, manatees – the Amazon species is exclusively vegetarian and also one of the three manatee species in the world, etc. However, the majority of mammals are Read more

lovebird.jpg1. LOVEBIRDS – very adorable little small breed from Africa, lovebirds can be tamed like common parrots except for the aggressiveness towards opposite sex, the male rubs the perch as a distinct sexual behavior, which is quite disturbing to some owners. They have to be housed in different cages. Generally, lovebirds are excellent in parenting their siblings and very good in breeding.

Aquarium Care for the Freshwater Guppy by Li Ming Wong

Guppies are perhaps the most popular type of freshwater fish to keep in an aquarium. Luckily, they are fairly easy to keep as well. Guppies are hardy fish that can adjust easily to minor fluctuations in water quality. However, don’t allow these fluctuations to become common practice, as they do cause some stress to the fish. The water temperature in an aquarium for guppies should be kept between seventy two and eighty two degrees. The P.H. level should be kept between 7.0 and 8.2. As you can see these specifications are much more forgiving than those for certain tropical or marine fish. Guppies mature quickly and usually only grow to be about one and a half to two inches long. There small bodies and feathery fan like tails add a lot of interest to the tank. They are just fun to watch.

As with any type of aquarium, there are three basic components to Read more

Pets Are People Too….Wait……..Uh……. by Jeff Swett

Okay, so animals aren’t actually people, but they have feelings like we do. Which makes them like people, doesn’t it? If a group of us were sitting around the living room hanging out, my old dog would sit in his own place and just look around at everyones faces because he thought that’s all we were doing. He thought he was a person too.

People like to have fun, right? So do pets! In fact, I guarantee your pets need more fun. Imagine how boring it must be to sit around the house all day with no company, as you wait for your owner (your best friend mind you) to get home from school or work only to be too tired to show you the attention you’ve been craving all day.
