What Bedding Is Best for Hedgehogs?

October 27, 2008 by Kimberly · 2 Comments

As you all may remember, I own an African Pygmy Hedgehog…It’s the 2nd one I’ve owned, in fact.

When you are choosing bedding for your little critters, you need to keep a few things in mind:

* Comfort
* Smell
* Dryness
* Safety
* Price

Pestell Corn Cob Bedding (40-lb bag)I use corn cob bedding, after trying so many different kinds over the years.

I found that cedar and pine shavings start to smell awful quickly! Also, they just hold the water and can harbor mold a lot easier. Plus, I didn’t feel that it was very comfortable to sleep in.

Why Do I Use That?
* Our hedgehog can move them around easily, since they enjoy burrowing. It moves to her body shape due to the small size of the pieces. It’s almost like lying down in small beads.

* It fights smell of hedgie waste longer than any other type of bedding I’ve used.

* It is organic and safe to use, even if it happens to get into their food or water.

* It is super absorbent and keeps the area dry.

* It is really cheap too! Only about $15.00 for a huge, 40 lb bag!

It Rocks!

Is That All I Use?
Actually, until just recently, this is all I used. However, I recently discovered a neat product that keeps the bedding from smelling.

Critter Litter - 4 lb.It’s called Read more

Improve the Environment & Reduce Your Waste Using This Service

October 26, 2008 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

Okay, I found the coolest “new”, free service online today!

It’s called Freecycle.org and it is helping communities all over the globe!

alburylandfill-pdHow?
“It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills.”

How cool is that? VERY! If you save are working to save the planet, you’re working to save animals, their habitat and the pollution that kills them!

Basically, almost anything, whether big or small, that you want to get rid of that is “lightly used” or unused, that you want to give away (there’s no trading or selling of any kind…in fact, you’ll be suspended or removed from the network), you put an OFFER up, and someone or many people will contact you and usually give you a reason why they want it to.

Then, you decide who you want to give it to, and arrange for them to pick it up or exchange it somewhere neutral (for safety reasons).

If there’s something you want or need, you Read more

Our New Pair of Apricot & Black Oranda Goldfish

October 21, 2008 by Kimberly · 6 Comments

We welcome our new pair of oranda.

I’ll bet you’ve never heard of apricot oranda before, and I had never seen anything like them before.

They were actually labeled orange and black oranda and were in a tank full of them, except these two weren’t the typical orange or “gold” color. They are clearly apricot in color and stood out to me!

Of course, loving unique animals, I fell in love right away.

I left the pet store and ran a bunch of errands for most of the day, but could not get these two off my mind.

So, What Did I Do?
I drove right back to the pet store and hoped for the best that they would still be there.

They were meant for us…They were staring me in the face when I got there.

I was only going to get one, but they followed each other all over the tank through the crowd of other orandas.

I didn’t have the heart to break them up, so they both came home with me.

They both are unique in their Read more

Treats for Your Fish?

October 15, 2008 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

This past week, I went into one of our local pet stores and noticed something I had never seen before.

I noticed they had thin slices of zucchini in the tanks for the goldfish…I didn’t look at the tropicals.

I had to ask…They said they give them a treat in each tank every day. Sometimes thin slices of zucchini, cucumber or oranges.

Since then, I’ve been “treating” my goldfish with something tasty every couple days.

* Tip: Slice the vegetable as thinly as humanly possible, so that they can actually eat it, and easily. It may be of use to you to use a mandolin or use a peeler to peel the vegetable, but extremely thin.

What I’ve noticed they especially like are Read more

Apparently, I’m a Goldfish Freak!

October 9, 2008 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

Who knew?
I didn’t realize that I would be a goldfish freak!

I didn’t know I’d get addicted to all of the brilliant colors and crazy mutations of different sub-species of goldfish.

I have a goldfish wishlist – I’d love a bright orange Bubble-Eye, a chocolate brown Pom-Pom with vibrant orange puffs, a gorgeous colored Celestial Eye, and a blue Oranda!

I need a bigger tank…LOL!

When you go into a good pet store and look at the community goldfish aquariums, it is simply awesome with glitters of so many different colors.

What’s even neater is that when I get these amazingly colored and unique sub-species, they will interbreed giving even more amazing babies!

I can hardly wait until Spring when Read more

Awesome Ground Cover For Aquariums

October 3, 2008 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

When I was setting up my aquarium, I couldn’t find a gravel I liked enough for the bottom.

So, I went looking at glass beads, and couldn’t seem to find what I was looking for. Either they weren’t pretty, or there weren’t enough to cover the bottom of my aquarium.

I perused the craft aisle at the dollar store and found an amazing alternative!

Have you seen the plastic Ice Crystal Gems that people use for in the bottom of vases with flowers in them? They look like just that…ice crystal gems!

I bought 20-some-odd packages (they’re small – about 125 pieces/package) of sky blue and crystal clear gems. Then, I thought of getting a little bit more creative adding a beautiful turquoise, like the Carribean Seas, to the mix.

I figured I’d use these, as a cheap fix, until I found the gravel or beads that I really wanted.

I got them home, put them in a colander and scrubbed them with a brush, soap and warm water.

I had nothing in the bottom, as I set up the aquarium quickly for the fish to accommodate them.

So, I dropped them into the aquarium. I was worried that maybe they would have an air pocket inside of them and float, but I only had about 5 pieces that didn’t sink to the bottom.

In fact, a few floated around the tank for a while under water. It was really quite beautiful!

What I’ve found is that these are a much better alternative to gravel or beads!

Why Is That?
Because they are lightweight. The fish are able to Read more
