Clownfish on the Great Barrier Reef

Premnas biaculeatus You’ll know Clownfish from the popular children’s movie:
Finding Nemo

They have a special adaptation that allows them to live in anemone and not be stung or killed.

It’s great protection for these cute, little ones and they are found all over the Great Barrier Reef.

Here’s a short video to show you them in their natural habitat and living amongst sea anemones.

These adaptations of the clownfish are amazing, which allows it to live in sea anemones…It helps them surprise prey, protects them from predators and gives them a place to sleep quietly.

How? Anemone don’t sting them with their nematocysts because the clownfish’s mucous coating is made of sugars instead of proteins and they don’t recognize them as prey because of this! Clever!

* Tip: If you have clownfish in your aquarium at home as an exotic pet, you will probably want to also buy a real anemone for it, so that it has a natural habitat that it’s comfortable in.

There are many different species of clownfish and anemonefish that look quite different, but still all have the same ability to live amongst anemone!

  4. Clownfish are really clever. They are also aggressive.

  5. Kimberly says:

    Yes, they are very clever!

You seem to find them aggressive?

    Kimberly :)

  6. Clownfish begin to produce a protective mucous coat for their bodies when they come into contact with sea anemones for the first time. The coat continues to develop when the fish interacts with the anemone more often so that it will not get stung.

  7. Kimberly says:

That is really cool! What an amazing way God created them! Fabulous…

    Thanks for sharing that,

    Kimberly :)
