Sad Day for an Owl in Dallas
April 28, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
We play sand volleyball every weekend in Dallas, and often go to Yucatan in Coppell, Texas, but went across the street to Lone Star on Saturday.
They were having a collegiate sand volleyball tournament, so we set up our games on a back court.
They have some nets on the sides where the fences are to keep the volleyballs in, so they don’t go into the industrial stuff next to it – it’s got dense bush and a stream, I think…You’d never get your $50 volleyball back!
What was sad to me was that there was a large owl that apparently got stuck in the net and died. It’s feet were so badly wound in the net and it’s wing feathers were stuck too.
It must have Read more

Ashes to Gems – Have You Heard of This?
April 16, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
I’m not really sure how I feel about this product/service.
If you haven’t heard about this before, as I hadn’t, you must listen…
This place I stumbled upon today called Ashes2Gems.com, turns just that – ashes to gems.
However, they use the cremated remains of your pet or relative to do it.
Each set of remains is used to create a man-made diamond (not CZ) from your loved one’s ashes, nails or hair.
Basically, they extract the carbon content of the “cremains” and use it in a secret, patented process to create these beautiful stones.
It is an expensive service, but the stone is unique and well, made of your loved one.
The cost for this is:
Conversion of ashes, nails or hair, into a real 1 carat cut and polished yellow diamond costs around £3950 (fully inclusive).
A 1-carat Pink or Blue diamond costs up to £6250. These prices include personal collection of the material, uniquely identifying the source, sending to the laboratory, intermediary depositing of funds and the release and delivery to your door.
It is possible for them to create different Read more

Check Out the Dark Sky Festival in Harmony, Florida April 25th
April 16, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
Have you heard of light pollution?
I’ve heard of sound pollution and pollution from garbage and things like that, but not light pollution before today!
Why is it considered Pollution?
When you live in a city like Dallas, for instance, how many stars do you see at night? NOT MANY at all!
In fact, I could probably count on 1 or 2 hands how many stars there are.
When we’re in Niagara Falls, there are a few more…
But when we’re “up north” in Ontario, somewhere like Port Franks or Collingwood, it seems like you could reach out to the sky and grab a star!
There are so many stars, you couldn’t possibly count them all! They are bright, you can see shooting stars and sometimes what appears to be a satellite! Fantastical!
So, What’s the Point?
The point is that wildlife that functions at night absolutely needs that darkness, as well as our own human circadian rhythms to stay healthy and stay in balance. Animals get disorientated in light when it’s supposed to be dark outside – you know, like a “deer in headlights”…
…Not to mention the sheer amount of energy we use and byproduct gaseous waste from the lights we have in use all night is bad for the environment and our planet.
The Dark Sky Festival will be in Harmony, Florida on April 25th from 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm with free admission and free parking!
What is the Dark Sky Festival?
It will be held outdoors in low-light conditions on the streets and walks of the Town Square in Harmony, Florida. The festival is in existence to expose the general public to the importance of dark skies for not only for astronomers, but for wildlife and your own mental and physical health – Get out there to find out why!

There will be an ambient space musician, speakers illustrating the necessity of our dark skies and how it really affects our health and the surrounding areas around you. Also, there will be numerous telescopes set up for people to star gaze, or just sit and enjoy the sky with your family & friends!
The festival isn’t just for astronomers or people who enjoy stars. It’s to be able to appreciate the night sky, the way things are supposed to be!
Light pollution may seem like an insignificant thing compared to the other pollution we are encountering on our planet today, but it’s the easiest to solve!
You’ve heard about Earth Hour, which occurrs annually on March 25th – now, why not spread that in to everyday life?
Turn off unneccessary lights at night, change your outdoor lights to ones that reduce glare and be sure your lights are aimed where you want them to shine – don’t waste half the light into the sky!
Our starry sky is a precious commodity! Enjoy it to the fullest!

Black Birds in Dallas – What’s That About?
April 15, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
If you live in Dallas, you’ll know exactly what I mean…
They’re everywhere!!!
There are many different visible species of these “black birds”…In fact one of them has a chocolate hugh; there are some with a blue hugh – some are larger, some are smaller…
Now, they’re not crows and they’re not the black birds I remember from Canada…
So What?
Well, I want to strongly caution you to ever park under a tree in a parking lot – that space is empty for a reason.
There can be upwards of 100 of these very loud birds per tree, and you’ll see them lined up on the telephone wires in the city.
In the springtime and summer, there are definitely a large increase in the number of birds, primarily because, well, in the winter it’s cold and they’re less active or because they migrate further South when it gets cold – like to Mexico or further – and come back when it’s warm.
Last night, while watching the boys play tennis, I actually watched one single solitary black bird at the school on the top of a telephone pole.
(So, one day, when you’re having a tea at Starbuck’s, just watch a few of them in the parking lot.)
It was very loud with a shrill and changeable Read more

A Box Jellyfish for a Pet?
April 15, 2009 by Kimberly · 7 Comments
My hubby and I watched the movie Seven Pounds with Will Smith a few nights ago, which was fabulous, I might add!
In the movie, the main character has a box jellyfish as an exotic pet in a large cylindrical tank!
What an amazing creature, which just happens to have the most deadly venom in the animal kingdom!
In fact, there have been 5,568 human fatalities due to the box jellyfish recorded since 1954.
Extreme care and caution needs to be taken when caring for a pet of this danger level.
Also, you cannot store the jellyfish with any other creature in the tank, as they’ll paralyze it and eat it.
Although so high venomous, the sea turtle is immune to the sting of the jellyfish and is one of their food sources.
However, it is a fantastical Read more

ATV Rollover Dangers
April 15, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
Many of you own farms or land that you either monitor or patrol often.
Some of you work for Parks & Wildlife commissions or something similar to that.
Some of you are simply ATV enthusiasts for the recreation of it, or for the ability to get out into the wild to see fabulous animals!
What you all need to be aware of is the inherent danger of ATV rollovers, which usually occurs due to a high center of gravity on the machine and a narrow wheel base.
Rollovers can cause serious injury or even a fatality because of their sheer size and weight and the fact that you are not covered and often don’t have doors to protect you if a rollover occurs.
In particular, the Yamaha Rhino Rollover has resulted in numerous lawsuits, which further resulted in Yamaha recalling more of it’s Rhino Side by Side (SxS) ATV vehicles because of this risk.
Riders were experiencing serious injuries such as broken legs, arms, serious spinal cord and head injuries.
Many of these Rhinos didn’t have doors, so when a rollover was occuring, the driver or passenger would try to put their leg down to stabilize or prevent it from happening. However, their legs would often get crushed because the vehicle or the momentum was too heavy and forceful.
Please, be aware of these risks, especially if you have a child with you.
Go slow, especially over terrain you are unfamiliar of and exercise good common sense.
It’s not a race…It’s recreation!

Owls in Dallas
We were out at Yucatan’s Sand Volleyball on Monday night in Dallas and it was really cold out…
I was just watching them play, and in between plays I would look off into the trees in the distance, or see if I could spot a bunny or two running around behind the back courts.
After seeing a few bats I noticed a very large bird flying…
It was certainly an owl – a large owl at that – and such graceful flight!
I have no idea what kind of owl it was as it was in the distance, but I watching it fly for quite a distance with elegant flaps of their wings – not even flaps but smooth glides of it’s wings.
Just beautiful!
I tried to look up owls in Dallas in a search to see if I could give you more information, but since sports is so prevalent in Dallas, all I got were sports teams called the “Owls” for pages and pages.
Then, I looked up Texas wildlife sites and didn’t get much further either…
There’s only one other time I have seen an owl in Dallas – in fact, the Read more
