Seriously…even you don’t want to be in your car when it’s hot and you don’t have air conditioning…

…Do you?

Well, guess what…Neither does your pet! In fact, they have much more hair than we do – they REALLY don’t want to be that hot.

What’s worse is that you may endanger their lives. If it gets too hot for them, they could overheat from heat exhaustion.

You see, many animals don’t cool off like we do with sweat, like dogs and cats. They must pant.

Some animals like the heat, but if you leave them in intense heat for too long, you could literally “cook them alive”, like fish, reptiles, birds and small rodents like mice, rats or guinea pigs.

If it wasn’t bad enough that you were uncomfortable, don’t endanger your pets’ lives – Be sure your auto air conditioning is working properly before traveling or transporting your pets to and from any destination!

If your vehicle’s AC Compressor isn’t working, you will want to get it repaired.

Be sure to check out 1AirConditioning.com for more information and how you can get your AC repaired more inexpensively.

Your pets will thank you, and so will your family and friends when riding in the car with you!

As for animals, they can’t get away from the heat like you can by getting out of the car or opening the window. They’re confined by us.

That’s what I said!

I’ve been noticing a lot of bats this season in Dallas and to me, that’s a blessing…

That’s right!

I am so shocked every time I point out a bat to someone in the evening or night time and they nearly panic and run…

Bats aren’t the rabid, blood sucking, scary animals horror movies would have you believe they are.

In fact, they would love to stay away from you and have nothing to do with you! LOL…

They’re your best friends if you’re tired of all the darn mosquitoes biting you at night or during activities in the evening or on the weekends!

Why? Because bats love to eat them! Bats aren’t looking to fly down and latch themselves on your neck. They’re not stupid animals…

They are mammals, first of all, and have a highly developed sonar system. It is very, very unlikely that a bat would ever run into you unexpectedly.

They don’t have great eyesight, but they know that you’re there. What’s amazing is we usually don’t know they’re there and we’re supposed to be so much more intelligent and well adapted…LOL

Okay…other than owls, birds sleep at night. So, when you see a “bird” at night and it’s flying somewhat sporatically, it’s a bat!

Just knowing this one fact will open your eyes to bats…

Look at the night sky on a balmy night – surely you’ll see one and you’ll be amazed and happy to know that your insect exterminators are happily hard at work.

They’re amazing and I’m so happy to have seen so many of them this year. They really keep the insect problem at bay when they’re around – they love all flying insects including moths!

So, when you see your “first” bat in the night time sky, point it out to someone and tell them about bats…they’re an important part of our ecosystems and a much needed insect eater! Enjoy them!

I’m not really sure how I feel about this product/service.

If you haven’t heard about this before, as I hadn’t, you must listen…

This place I stumbled upon today called Ashes2Gems.com, turns just that – ashes to gems.

However, they use the cremated remains of your pet or relative to do it.

Each set of remains is used to create a man-made diamond (not CZ) from your loved one’s ashes, nails or hair.

Basically, they extract the carbon content of the “cremains” and use it in a secret, patented process to create these beautiful stones.

It is an expensive service, but the stone is unique and well, made of your loved one.

The cost for this is:

Conversion of ashes, nails or hair, into a real 1 carat cut and polished yellow diamond costs around £3950 (fully inclusive).

A 1-carat Pink or Blue diamond costs up to £6250. These prices include personal collection of the material, uniquely identifying the source, sending to the laboratory, intermediary depositing of funds and the release and delivery to your door.

It is possible for them to create different colors of diamonds in this way, that are very rare and expensive when found in nature, but are much more inexpensive, but equally as beautiful and have the exact same molecular composition as the rare, natural diamonds do.

In this process, it is possible to create gems that are yellow to amber, pink to peachy and blue to aqua.

I’ve never been so scared of a bird before…

In fact, I’ve never been scared of a bird before this!

When I lived in Western Australia, I was there to play softball. So, I jogged in the mornings each day.

The very first morning I went out through our neighborhood alone, I was shocked to see the amazing wildlife, parrots everywhere covering trees, a kangaroo or two, some kookaburras, some lizards and lots of flies! LOL…

…But there were these large birds called magpies, or “maggies” as their nicknamed there.

They are large like a big seagulls with pointy beaks, but are black and white all over…Or, they look like big crows with a bit of white on them…

They are much larger than their cousins around the world. The Western Magpie is the bird I was dealing with on a daily basis.

Why are they scary?
Well, it’s like they stalk you…They follow you where you walk, jog, run.

Then, if it’s nesting season, they’ll fly above you and swoop down on you, especially if you have long hair…

Why?
They want your hair for their nest. Either that, or they’re protecting their nests and you look like a predator!

I’ve even seen them chase other birds, animals, even hawks during this time.

I have long, long hair, so a ponytail just wasn’t going to do it. I either had to put my hair in a tight bun or wear a hat with my hair tucked into it when I jogged.

Anyway, they’re not little birds to say the least! They’ve even been known to kill small animals swooping on them or human babies…

There was a couple bringing their baby to the car when I was there back in the 90s and a maggie swooped down, for whatever reason, and cracked that babies skull.

Yes, I’m serious!

Anyway, if you see magpies in the air near you, cover your head and face or wave your arms above your head…

There are Warning Signs explaining that the magpies swoop. They say to walk quickly through the area, but not to run. They also suggest to wear a hat or carry an umbrella.

People riding bikes should dismount and walk through the area.

I got swooped and one just cut my skin on my forearm as I was waving them above my head. Looking back, probably not the right thing to do, but it was swooping me…

Why my Aussie roommates didn’t warn me…LOL…I don’t know…LOL…

Keep a look out! You can’t harm these birds in any way, as they are a protected species under the Nature Conservation Act in Australia.

***

There are as many as 5 different species of Humpback Dolphin, but it’s often disputed.

2 species were known to exist even as late as mid-2000, the Atlantic Humpback Dolphin and the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin.

However, since then studies have shown that these species have diverged into more distinct species.

Here’s a short video I found of some humpback dolphins off the coast of South Africa:

The humpback dolphin that frequents the Australian waters, including the Great Barrier Reef, is the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin. This species is also called the Chinese White Dolphin by Chinese locals.

Scientific Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Cetacea
Family: Delphinidae
Genus: Sousa
Species: S. chinensis (Australian water variety), S. plumbea, S. teuszi, S. lentiginosa, S. borneensis

Have you ever seen dolphins blow bubbles and rings? It’s really amazing…magical!

Get great information and see amazing dolphins, plus Watch them blow bubbles here:

I will never forget the saying my University Professor made us memorize:

“Black, yellow, red – Watch where you tread!”

If you encounter a snake that is black, yellow and red in color, it could be poisonous or not, but the way to figure it out and quickly is to look at it’s patterning.

If the order of the colors goes black, yellow to red, in any direction, then it is certainly a poisonous snake – like a coral snake (photo above). Leave it alone and evacuate the area.

If the colors are different such as yellow, black then red, it’s a harmless snake, such as the milk snake.

***

My hedgehog loves treats!

I feed her 2 different staple foods, and then supplement her diet with different fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Sometimes, I consider those supplements as treats, but when I really want to treat her, and give her some great nutrition while I’m at it, I give her meal worms and crickets.

I know, I know…For many of you, that sounds disgusting, but she LOVES them!

Mind you, they are not alive and you don’t have to touch them…just shake a few into the bowl!

I don’t keep Kokonut in a closed cage or aquarium, so live crickets are out of the question…they’d be chirping all over the house after they escape! It is an open air cage with heavy gauge wire small enough that she couldn’t fit through, with a plastic bin-type bottom.

She could have been sleeping the entire day, but when I put these “treats” in her bowl, she’s out like a flash to devour them!

I prefer to get her the freeze-dried meal worms, that aren’t wet, but there are times I can’t find them anywhere either.

I haven’t seen crickets that way yet (freeze-dried), so they come in a can too.

For Kokonut, I get the smaller sized crickets, if I can, but she’s not picky…

…Just a few, and she is getting adequate protein and other nutrients she needs and absolutely loves!

Wanted to share that little tidbit with you!

Exo-Terra Meal Worms – 1.2 oz.

Exo Terra canned Mealworms are a convenient way to feed mealworms to reptiles. The worms have been cooked in the can to maintain nutritional value, flavor and aroma. This also softens the mealworms for easier digestion and breaks the bonds between the collagen protein to make it absorbable by reptiles. Collagen is an important fiber that aids in building bone, cartilage, skin and claw structures. Canned mealworms have the same nutritional value as live mealworms but are easier to digest.

As you all may remember, I own an African Pygmy Hedgehog…It’s the 2nd one I’ve owned, in fact.

When you are choosing bedding for your little critters, you need to keep a few things in mind:

* Comfort
* Smell
* Dryness
* Safety
* Price

I use corn cob bedding, after trying so many different kinds over the years.

I found that cedar and pine shavings start to smell awful quickly! Also, they just hold the water and can harbor mold a lot easier. Plus, I didn’t feel that it was very comfortable to sleep in.

Why Do I Use That?
* Our hedgehog can move them around easily, since they enjoy burrowing. It moves to her body shape due to the small size of the pieces. It’s almost like lying down in small beads.

* It fights smell of hedgie waste longer than any other type of bedding I’ve used.

* It is organic and safe to use, even if it happens to get into their food or water.

* It is super absorbent and keeps the area dry.

* It is really cheap too! Only about $15.00 for a huge, 40 lb bag!

It Rocks!

Is That All I Use?
Actually, until just recently, this is all I used. However, I recently discovered a neat product that keeps the bedding from smelling.

It’s called Critter Litter, and it’s typically used to potty train your small animals. However, my hedgie hasn’t responded to this idea.

No worries because these little “pearls” are super absorbent. It keeps the cage smelling fresher longer!

How? Well, it “absorbs moisture on contact and inhibits the bacteria that cause pet waste odors.”

Supposedly, if your small animal responds to this “potty training”, it “reduces cage cleaning by 30% or more”.

This product is all-natural and non-toxic, made of bentonite, an inert clay material found in many areas around the world.

I give this product a thumbs up too!

***

I hope you find this to be a Great Animal Products on Exotic Animal Lover! Until next time…

This past week, I went into one of our local pet stores and noticed something I had never seen before.

I noticed they had thin slices of zucchini in the tanks for the goldfish…I didn’t look at the tropicals.

I had to ask…They said they give them a treat in each tank every day. Sometimes thin slices of zucchini, cucumber or oranges.

Since then, I’ve been “treating” my goldfish with something tasty every couple days.

* Tip: Slice the vegetable as thinly as humanly possible, so that they can actually eat it, and easily. It may be of use to you to use a mandolin or use a peeler to peel the vegetable, but extremely thin.

What I’ve noticed they especially like are Goji Berries! I put a couple dried goji in the tank and it plumps up nicely and relatively quickly. They will all try to take pieces off of it.

Since Goji is the new “miracle” food of today, I thought it would be especially healthy for them. I’m glad they enjoy it too!

Try it with your fish too!
