Potato Cod on the Great Barrier Reef

As you saw in the last post’s video, there were some really amazing cod fish shown. So, I figured I would show you a little bit more about them. As you could guess, they are regular inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef. They can actually reach a length of 2 meters – that’s about as big as a reef shark, but it’s so much heavier and more bulky too! Wasn’t that awesome? I would love to do this one day…They are real gentle Yup, that's right! I have always wanted to start an animal refuge of my own...If you would like to help [ ... ]

Whitetip Reef Sharks on the Great Barrier Reef

The very first shark I ever saw in the ocean was a Whitetip Reef Shark! Not only that, it was the very first time I had ever snorkeled either…I went under the water for the first dip and there was a shark! It was probably about 5 feet long! Sure…It brought me right back up to the surface and ready to head back to shore, but our guide told me they’re harmless, unless you really mess around with them and bother them, which I was not even about to attempt. This wasn’t on the Great Barrier Reef, but on the Ningaloo Reef on [ ... ]

Manta Rays of the Great Barrier Reef

Manta Rays are the most graceful animals in the ocean, in my opinion. What a magical experience! I’ve wrangled up a video of some manta rays on the Great Barrier Reef that some divers captured! To explain the sheer of the first ray in the video, the diver was 60-70 feet above it…What a huge creature! Also, this video is in real time…This is how elegantly they “fly” through the water! It’s simply effortless to them! Yes, I’ve actually had the unbelievable opportunity to swim with a school of them on Yup, that's right! I have always wanted to start an animal refuge of [ ... ]

Have You Seen a Sawfish?

Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Chondrichthyes Subclass: Elasmobranchii Superorder: Batoidea Order: Pristiformes Family: Pristidae Genera: Anoxypristis, Pristis Species: There are 7 species in the 2 Genera Sawfish are in the ray family and are known by their long, saw-like snout. They are often called “Sharks with Swords”. Actually, the “teeth” on their snout aren’t really teeth at all…LOL Know what else is special about that snout? It is electro- and motion sensitive with tiny pores that detect the slightest variations, so it allows the sawfish to hover over the ocean or riverbed floor and detect their prey’s heart-beats below the sand or mud. Very handy! Not to mention, they are [ ... ]

European Eel Numbers Plummeted by 90%

Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Anguilliformes Family: Anguillidae Genus: Anguilla Species: A. anguilla European Eels are a snake-like fish that’s usually between 1-1.5 meters in length. They partake in a 3-year long migration, originally spawning in the Saragasso sea then heading towards Europe. By the time they enter estuaries in Europe, they are considered to be “glass eels”, I suppose because they are see-thru mostly. When they enter those freshwater estuaries and river systems, they undergo a Yup, that's right! The Spiny Dogfish – Unique Among Sharks

The Spiny Dogfish is in the shark family, and is distinguished from other sharks in that it has 2 spinal fins and no anal fin, unique to this family of shark. Spiny dogfish can grow to be 3.25 – 5.25 feet long They are counter-shaded, are greyish-brown in coloration and have white spots on their back with 2 spines. Counter-shaded means they are white on the bottom and their darker color on the top. Why are fish often colored this way? Well, it’s an evolutionary survival attribute. How? Good question! If predators are underneath them, what will they see? They’ll see their underbelly that’s white or whitish [ ... ]

Our New Pair of Apricot & Black Oranda Goldfish

We welcome our new pair of oranda. I’ll bet you’ve never heard of apricot oranda before, and I had never seen anything like them before. They were actually labeled orange and black oranda and were in a tank full of them, except these two weren’t the typical orange or “gold” color. They are clearly apricot in color and stood out to me! Of course, loving unique animals, I fell in love right away. I left the pet store and ran a bunch of errands for most of the day, but could not get these two off my mind. So, What Did I Do? I drove right [ ... ]
